Penang
Hill and Penang Botanic Gardens are two tourism icons among others
that take you on the wild side to amble through the natural and
landscape settings of the island. Penang Hill,
which was initiated in 1897, is the oldest hill station in the British
Empire. It stands 830 metres above sea level and is a popular place
for evening trekkers and tourists.
The
cool summit is accessible via the funicular train. However, energetic
adventure-seekers can choose to reach the top by foot through a
jungle path. It is here that you'll be mesmerised by the spectacular
view of George Town city, a beautiful flower garden, bird park,
and picturesque bungalow pleasing treats for your wandering
eyes.
Forbidden Fruit,
Bottle Brush and Traveller's Palm are some of the inhabitants that
greet you when you visit the Penang Botanic Garden. This treasure
trove of history and knowledge is 120 years old and meanders through
30 hectares of flora and fauna. Touted as one of the most valuable
heritage and natural assets of Penang, it is one of the oldest gardens
in the world with waterfalls, ponds and not forgetting Rhesus monkeys,
making your stroll through this garden a truly memorable one.
The
Butterfly Farm is another must visit attraction.
Operations commenced in 1986 and it is the world's largest butterfly
farm with 4,000 butterflies, frogs, scorpions and other insects
of 120 different species. Look out also for the lily pond, rock
garden, tunnel, bubbling mud pool and man-made waterfalls within
this garden.
The Teluk
Bahang Recreational Forest is another paradise that's not only
a treat for picnickers but also rich with valuable herbal plants.
With its excellent landscape entwined with fresh fish and tortoise
ponds, the various marked trails provide a choice for hikers to
explore these natural assets of Penang at their own ability. Rangers
also provide free tours and useful tips for visitors to ensure they
experience an enjoyable endeavor.
A
latest addition is the Tropical Spice Garden, a
treasure trove of more than 500 living specimens of lush and exotic
flora. This garden provides an enchanting escapade for tired souls
to indulge in some simple pleasures like stopping to smell the flowers
while walking barefooted on dewy grass.
Jerejak
Island, also known as the virgin jungle, is a pleasurable getaway
just minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Penang city. Towering
tropical trees and exotic orchids adds to that mystical touch to
its surrounding pristine nature.
Fun, knowledge
and beauty sums up Penang's nature havens. So, when in Penang, forget
indoors and head to the wilderness for some tranquility or adventure,
whatever your choice, you'll find it amidst Penang's lush greenery!
