Be
thrilled by our culture

An
amalgam of old and new, Penang exudes charm due to the diversity
and influences of its many cultures. This blending of culture is
believed to have developed after `the island of betel nut', once
owned by the Kedah Sultanate, was opened up by the British East
India Company (EIC) in 1786.
In
fact the name Penang is derived from the word `pinang', the Malay
meaning for the betel nut palm tree. The significance of this tree
to Penang is not limited to just its name. The modern day tri-colour
flag of Penang also features the tree.
Penang
became a busy entrepot and the island rapidly attracted more immigrants
from China, India, Arabia, Burma and Europe to name a few. Thereafter,
Penang became the meeting point for many cultures, which naturally
explains the chain of cultural influences be it food, dialects or
festive celebrations, all co-existing together so charmingly.
Despite
such inter-cultural fusion happening over the years, the beauty
of this whole scenario is that the unique features of the individual
cultures have been retained. Within each community, cultural identity
is enhanced through religious festivals and cultural shows
the Chingay Parade, Lion Dance, Thaipusam, Nine
Emperor Gods Festival, the Hungry Ghosts Festival,
Wesak Day, Christmas, and so forth.

Experience
a whole gamut of arts events from plays and performances to theatre,
concerts and exhibitions at Pesta Pulau Pinang.
Don't miss this annual festival for an enchanting treat with family
and friends.
A
true melting pot, Penang culture with its many festivals, cuisines,
architecture, dialects, lifestyles, festive celebrations and events,
has become the pulse of this precious island.
